A healthy, balanced diet is the key to success for all sportspeople. Good nutrition helps to improve sporting performance, both physically and mentally. The majority of an athlete’s diet should be made up of carbohydrates, found in foods such as wholegrain bread, rice, pasta and potatoes. This provides important sustained energy. Fruit and vegetables are essential for providing vitamins and minerals in the diet, and protein-rich foods such as chicken, eggs, nuts and tuna play a key role in post-exercise recovery and repair. Eating an adequate amount of food, at regular intervals, is also important so that an athlete retains their level of energy.
2. Fluid intake.
Keeping hydrated before, during and after exercise is extremely important. Dehydration will seriously impair athletic performance, and can cause illness, collapse and fainting. Drinking should not be limited to feelings of thirst; fluid intake should be regular, particularly during warm weather or strenuous sessions. Your instructor should periodically have a 2 minute drink break to ensure students remain hydrated.
Water is the most suitable drink, although sports drinks are also helpful as they contain sodium which aids absorption, electrolytes which are lost during perspiration and can provide a carbohydrate boost.
3. Positive mental attitude.
As important as physical attributes, a martial artist needs to believe in their ability. A ‘can-do’ attitude, positivity and a strong desire to achieve goals will go a surprisingly long way in improving performance.
4. Respect for your instructor.
Respect and admiration for your instructor isn’t necessarily automatic, but is vital for martial arts success. Your instructor will be the most influential person in your martial arts career, and the regard you have for them will provide motivation to strive to be your best, not simply for yourself but also but also for your coach. Candy is not recommended for lengthy training sessions, however, as it can lead to an eventual drop in glucose levels, giving the opposite to the desired effect!
9. Avoid injury.

An injury not only puts the body under unnecessary strain but also hinders further training sessions, practice sessions and sparring.
